Day 27 Stage 3 to Mildura

940 kilometres from the mouth.

Left as early as possible.  I think it was about 7:30.

No wind early and then later was northerly.  Nearly all the reaches were northerly pointing. So it was an all paddling day.
Passed up some ripper camp sites to get as far as I could.  And here it is camp 940.

Don’t let that sandy bank fool you.  I was only thinking this morning that maybe mud would be more tolerable than sand in everything.  Now I have both.
Oh and… .  See that thing in the bottom left that looks like a chair.  It’s now some sort of shelf.  It failed the 100 kilogram test.  Well it’s probably less that that by now.  I notice that the foot pegs are getting further away.  I think that’s because my rear end is getting smaller and I’m moving further back in the seat.
Boiled some water in case I run out tomorrow.  I saw someone on a houseboat filling their kettle with river water today so that’s good enough for me but what’s that foam on the top.

Mildura is about 50 away.  Will have to see how I feel tomorrow.  I’m due for a days rest and was hoping it would be Mildura.  My medical advisers are telling me to slow down.  Certainly felt like I should today.

  1. You have had a pretty heavy duty couple of days. Sounds like you are still enjoying it and you haven’t lost your sense of humour. Not worth overdoing it to make Mildura , but that is something only you will be able to judge. Your camp sites have looked great, I am surprised that you have been able to find so many sites at the waters edge. I thought there would be more cliffs and high banks. I am still tracking your daily progress, wish I was healthy enough to do it myself. My way of getting a little bit of the adventure. We are down at Phillip Island for a week so had the YAK out today and tried out my sail for the first time. You know the one, the round windpaddle I had for my huge canoe. Went really well, I thought it would be a bit cumbersome but it is perfect for what I want. Will send a photo when I take one. Take care, talk to the trees, and soak up the serenity. cheers Rob 0414 399 954

    1. I’ll see how I feel in the morning. Keen to see the picture of the sail. There are high banks but almost every corner has some sort of sandbar. The accessible ones have quite a lot of campers. Enjoy Phillip Island.

      1. Weather has turned very windy down here, so may have to wait a few days for the photo, afraid I will be the first person to sail to tassie in a kayak. May have to put it up on dry land for the photo.
Im guessing you are probably in mildura as I write this.

  2. The water should be OK to drink just as long as the foam scum doesn’t set when it cools and the bottom of the pot doesn’t corrode out.

I agree with Rob – the camp sites have looked good but I was not as surprised at the frequency of them as its a similar story to the Lachlan River which I used to paddle in as a kid.
